"The Flaring Crab"

The Crab nebula is the remnant of a supernova that exploded 1000
years ago. It consists of a compact object, the Crab pulsar, and a
gaseous remnant. The object is visible along the whole spectrum, being
particularly bright in the continuum at X-rays and in gamma-ray
energies. Recently, the continuum, non-pulsating emission has been
found to dramatically increase it intensity on timescale of hours.
This is unprecedented and a theoretical challenge. Supernova remnants,
even plerions as the Crab, were so far considered non-variable sources
on short timescales, to the point that the Crab was a standard
calibration source. In this talk I will explain the cause and physics
