Susana

Dear friends and colleagues,

John Tonry, Brent Tully, Mark Chun, Christoph Baranec, David Rubin and
myself (Ben Shappee) have three postdoc ads that we would like to bring to
your attention. These are three separate but related ads and we expect
that the three selected postdocs will work closely with one another. We
kindly ask that you bring these ads to the attention of all potentially
interested candidates (including yourselves, if relevant!), especially
women and underrepresented minorities.

*1) **Hawai‘i Supernova Flows Postdoctoral Fellowship *
Applications submitted by *Jan 31* will receive full consideration
although the position will remain open until filled.
https://jobregister.aas.org/ad/6ad4eda1
"Applications are invited in connection with a postdoctoral position at the
Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawai‘i in Honolulu, to work with
Ben Shappee (shappee en hawaii.edu), John Tonry (jt en ifa.hawaii.edu), and Brent
Tully (tully en ifa.hawaii.edu) on the Hawai‘i Supernova Flows program to
determine distances to Type Ia supernovae and map the velocity field of the
universe to a redshift corresponding to z=0.1. The selected candidate is
expected to be involved at all levels in the program including: (a) daily
evaluation of candidate Supernova Type Ia (SNIa) events coming from
Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) and other facilities,
(b) the initiation of follow-up infrared photometry and spectroscopy,
primarily with the 3.8-meter United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) and
University of Hawai‘i (UH) 2.2-meter telescope respectively, (c)
contributes to development and improvement to the chain of procedures, from
observations through post-observation reductions and analysis of data
products, (d) maintains database of the accumulating information, (e)
participates in the scientific evaluation of the resultant products and
collaboration in publications. The successful candidate will have the
opportunity to apply for observing time on all Maunakea telescopes. "

*2) **Robotic University of Hawaii 88” Telescope Postdoctoral Fellow*
Applications submitted by *Feb 21* will receive full consideration
although the position will remain open until filled.
https://jobregister.aas.org/ad/da1fe60c
"Applications are invited in connection with a postdoctoral position at the
Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawai‘i in Honolulu, to work with
Ben Shappee (shappee en hawaii.edu), Christoph Baranec (baranec en hawaii.edu),
and Mark Chun (markchun en hawaii.edu) in the roboticization effort of the
University of Hawai’i (UH) 2.2-meter telescope, also known as UH88”, on
Maunakea as part of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Major Research
Instrumentation award. The robotic UH88” telescope will be well
instrumented with the second generation of the robotic Adaptive Optics
system (Robo-AOII), a wide-field optical imager, and the SuperNovae
Integral Field Spectrograph (SNIFS). The selected candidate is expected to
(a) develop a robotic scheduler balancing between programs and instruments,
(b) aid in the interface between the scheduler and telescope control system
and instruments, (c) develop data archiving and data severing
infrastructure, (d) monitor data quality and telescope performance, (e)
integrate existing data reduction pipelines in the data severing
infrastructure, (f) participate in other robotcization activities, and (g)
carry out a research program using the UH88” telescope and other observing
resources. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to apply for
observing time on all Maunakea telescopes."

*3) Postdoctoral Position in Supernova Cosmology*
Applications submitted by *Jan 31* will receive full consideration
although the position will remain open until filled.
https://jobregister.aas.org/ad/06bf9ae4
"The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Hawaiʻi at
Mānoa is hiring a postdoctoral researcher in supernova cosmology and
related areas, including astronomical observing, data analysis, research
into SN Ia standardization, photometric calibration, and/or cosmological
analyses. The appointment is for an initial period of two years, starting
Fall 2020 (other start dates are negotiable), with an available extension
to a third year. The postdoc will pursue independent research using UH
facilities as well as collaborating with Prof. David Rubin and others. Send
questions to drubin en hawaii.edu."

Warmest regards,
Christoph Baranec
Mark Chun
David Rubin
Benjamin Shappee
John Tonry
Brent Tully
