Dear Maria Capeluto,

*SPIE Optics + Photonics, scheduled for 23 - 27 August in San Diego,
California, is transitioning to a free, online event.*

While many of us look forward to this annual meeting in San Diego,
following public health guidance and our focus on your wellbeing, SPIE is
cancelling our in-person Optics + Photonics event and transforming it into
a no-charge Digital Forum that will run *24 - 28 August 2020*. This will
include live plenary presentations, on-demand technical talks, and
opportunities to connect virtually with other participants and exhibitors.

We know it is hard to devote full days to watch presentations as you would
when away at a conference when you may now be working from home. We will
offer time-synchronized sessions such as live plenary talks and networking
sessions, but most technical talks and papers will be available whenever
it’s convenient for you. To further reduce time pressure, we are making
presentations available on an ongoing basis via the SPIE Digital Library,
and freely available to anyone who registers.

While impossible to recreate the serendipity and new connections that
develop in the sessions and hallways of any great event, the Digital Forum
will offer online tools to discuss details with presenters and “meet and
chat” with other attendees. The virtual exhibition will help you learn
about top suppliers at your convenience. You will also have the opportunity
to enjoy some of the special activities you’ve come to expect at Optics +
Photonics, continuing in an online, interactive format.

Authors and presenters will receive an email with instructions regarding
uploading presentations and timelines along with the online discussion
features. Exhibitors will also receive follow-up emails from our staff.

SPIE will refund or provide credit toward future events for money you’ve
invested for registration, exhibit space, or sponsorship. Look for details
in future emails and on the event website.
