Hace unos meses, Springer Nature cerró la revista Investigación y Ciencia (edición española de Scientific American) y al cabo de poco decidió también cerrar la web con todos los contenidos de la revista. Eso son muchísimos artículos de divulgación (la revista funcionó durante más de 40 años), que son de alta calidad y se pierden. Un grupo de gente vinculada a la revista ha escrito esta carta que les reenvío, para pedirle a Springer que haga accesibles al público los contenidos de esa web.<br>

La idea es quer mucha gente firme la carta para que Springer haga caso. Por eso se la reenvío, para que consideren firmarla ustedes.<br>

Si quieren firmar la petición respondan al autor del mensaje que les reenvío, es decir, <a>javiergrand@gmail.com</a>, con una copia de ese mensaje y su nombre y afiliación. Los autores de la petición piden no difundir la iniciativa ni el texto de la carta en redes sociales, hasta que se publique la carta.<br>

Espero que todo esté yendo bárbaro. Te escribo para contarte una iniciativa<br>
que estamos llevando a cabo para intentar salvar los contenidos de la<br>
web <a href="http://www.investigacionyciencia.es" target="_blank">www.investigacionyciencia.es</a>, por si te apetece sumarte.<br>
<br>
Como ya sabes, hace unas semanas el grupo Springer Nature decidió<br>
repentinamente dejar de publicar* Investigación y Ciencia* después de 46<br>
años de historia. Unos días después, a esa decisión siguió el cierre de la<br>
web <a href="http://www.investigacionyciencia.es" target="_blank">www.investigacionyciencia.es</a> y, con ello, la pérdida de todo el archivo histórico de la revista, con más de<br>
20.000 artículos sobre ciencia y tecnología.<br>
<br>
Varias personas que hemos tenido una relación estrecha con la revista<br>
estamos poniendo en marcha una petición para solicitar a Springer Nature<br>
que reconsidere su posición y vuelva a poner el archivo digital de<br>
<em>Investigación y Ciencia</em> a disposición del público, dado que creemos que su desaparición<br>
supone una enorme pérdida para la sociedad hispanohablante. Llegado el<br>
momento, la petición se publicará en forma de carta abierta, pero por ahora<br>
estamos intentando recoger firmas entre miembros de la comunidad<br>
científica, instituciones y profesionales de la comunicación. El texto<br>
íntegro de la petición, donde explicamos las razones por las que<br>
consideramos tan importante salvar este inmenso archivo digital, figura al<br>
final de este correo.<br>

Quería pedirte que leyeras la carta y que consideres la posibilidad de<br>
firmarla. En caso de que decidas hacerlo, necesitaría que <strong>respondas a este<br>
correo</strong> (con copia íntegra de este mensaje) <strong>incluyendo tu nombre<br>
completo y tu afiliación tal y como quieras que figure en la petición.</strong> <br>
<br>
Por otro lado, y siempre que te parezca bien, te animo a que reenvíes esta<br>
petición a cualquier otra persona o institución que creas que pudiera estar<br>
interesada en añadir su firma. En tal caso, para que podamos considerar su<br>
adhesión como válida, es necesario que <strong>cada firmante me escriba<br>
directamente a mí, incluyendo en el correo su nombre, afiliación o cargo, y<br>
una copia de este mensaje en el cuerpo del email.</strong><br>

Carta abierta a Springer Nature para salvaguardar el archivo digital de<br>
<a href="http://www.investigacionyciencia.es" target="_blank">www.investigacionyciencia.es</a><br>
<br>
El pasado 31 de enero de 2023, el grupo Springer Nature decidió dejar de<br>
publicar Investigación y Ciencia (fundada en 1976) y Mente y Cerebro<br>
(2002). Era el punto final en la historia de dos revistas que, fieles a su<br>
compromiso original con el rigor y la claridad, se han ganado una excelente<br>
reputación en el mundo de la cultura científica en español. Desde sus<br>
inicios, han servido de referencia para científicos, divulgadores,<br>
docentes, estudiantes y, sobre todo, para el público general interesado en<br>
la ciencia, entre el cual han despertado incontables vocaciones<br>
científicas.<br>
<br>
Pocos días después, el 17 de febrero, se produjo el cierre de<br>
<a href="http://www.investigacionyciencia.es" target="_blank">www.investigacionyciencia.es</a>, la web que albergaba un archivo digital de 46<br>
años de historia. Este incluía todos los contenidos de las revistas<br>
Investigación<br>
y Ciencia, Mente y Cerebro, Temas, Cuadernos y Especial, así como las<br>
noticias publicadas en la sección de actualidad científica y la plataforma<br>
de blogs SciLogs. En total, más de 21.000 artículos.<br>
<br>
Con la clausura de <a href="http://www.investigacionyciencia.es" target="_blank">www.investigacionyciencia.es</a> desaparece un tejido<br>
absolutamente único de contenidos científicos y divulgativos elaborados por<br>
los mejores expertos de todos los campos del conocimiento y procedentes de<br>
todo el mundo, incluidos científicos universales de la talla de Paul Dirac,<br>
Vera Rubin o Ramon Margalef, entre muchísimos otros.<br>
<br>
Además de albergar la traducción al español de miles de artículos de Scientific<br>
American y Nature escritos por expertos internacionales (entre ellos más de<br>
un centenar de premios Nobel), la web incluía miles de artículos originales<br>
elaborados por los mejores científicos de España y Latinoamérica, noticias<br>
escritas por periodistas especializados y decenas de blogs de ciencia<br>
conducidos por investigadores. En conjunto, conformaban una ventana única<br>
al desarrollo global de la ciencia a lo largo del último medio siglo. Un<br>
canal de transferencia del conocimiento científico único en el mundo de<br>
habla hispana.<br>
<br>
Por su importancia cultural, educativa, histórica y científica, el archivo<br>
digital de <a href="http://www.investigacionyciencia.es" target="_blank">www.investigacionyciencia.es</a> constituye, pues, un legado de<br>
valor incalculable para la comunidad hispanohablante. Preocupados por el<br>
perjuicio que conlleva su cierre, solicitamos al grupo Springer Nature que<br>
reconsidere esta decisión y vuelva a poner a disposición del público los<br>
contenidos del archivo, ya sea a través de una web propia o mediante la<br>
cesión del archivo a una institución sin ánimo de lucro que quiera hacerse<br>
cargo del mismo.<br>

Sería una pérdida irreparable que este valioso legado de Prensa Científica,<br>
Scientific American y Springer Nature se perdiera para siempre.<br>

On January 31, 2023, the Springer Nature Group decided to cease publication<br>
of Investigación y Ciencia (established in 1976) and Mente y Cerebro<br>
(2002). This marked the end of two magazines that, loyal to their initial<br>
commitment to accuracy and clarity, had earned a superb reputation within<br>
the broader Spanish-speaking science community. Since their inception, they<br>
had been an invaluable resource for scientists, science communicators,<br>
teachers, students and, most importantly, for the wider public interested<br>
in science, among whom they helped spark countless scientific careers.<br>
<br>
A few days later, on February 17, the website <a href="http://www.investigacionyciencia.es" target="_blank">www.investigacionyciencia.es</a><br>
was shut down. The site included not only the entire content of the<br>
magazines Investigación y Ciencia, Mente y Cerebro, Temas, Cuadernos and<br>
Especial, but also years' worth of daily online news and the blogging<br>
platform SciLogs. In total, more than 21,000 Spanish-language articles<br>
spanning 46 years of history have been lost.<br>
<br>
For the 490 millions of native Spanish speakers worldwide, the shutdown of<br>
<a href="http://www.investigacionyciencia.es" target="_blank">www.investigacionyciencia.es</a> means the loss of an unparalleled network of<br>
scientific and educational content authored by the best international<br>
experts in all fields of science—experts that included more than one<br>
hundred Nobel Prize winners as well as universal figures like Paul Dirac,<br>
Vera Rubin or Ramon Margalef, among many others.<br>
<br>
In addition to the Spanish translation of thousands of Scientific American<br>
and Nature articles, <a href="http://www.investigacionyciencia.es" target="_blank">www.investigacionyciencia.es</a> hosted thousands of<br>
original articles written by the best scientists from Spain and Latin<br>
America, thousands of science news from top science journalists, and dozens<br>
of science blogs run by Spanish-speaking researchers. It was a<br>
one-of-a-kind window on the global development of science over the last<br>
half century, and a unique channel for the transfer of scientific knowledge<br>
within the global Spanish-speaking community.<br>
<br>
Because of its historical, cultural, educational, and scientific relevance,<br>
the digital archive of <a href="http://www.investigacionyciencia.es" target="_blank">www.investigacionyciencia.es</a> represents an<br>
invaluable legacy for the Spanish-speaking world. Concerned about the harm<br>
caused by its closing, we hereby ask the Springer Nature Group to<br>
reconsider its shutdown and make its contents publicly available again—either<br>
through a Springer Nature owned website, or by handing it over to a<br>
non-profit organization willing to take care of it.<br>

It would be an irreparable loss if this unparalleled joint legacy of Prensa<br>
Científica, Scientific American and Springer Nature were to be lost forever.<br>
