      Science on Public Policy

      Why, when the very survival of our planet is at stake, do the warnings of scientists so often take second place to less vital concerns when public policy is made?  


      The answers are many and varied, ranging from the very different goals and time frames that separate laboratories from legislatures to the difficulties of communicating highly complex information to politicians and the people. 


      Our current issue of Agora explores the challenges of increasing the impact of science on public policy and what scientists can do to make it happen. Here's a preview: 


        Indira Nath, L'OREAL-UNESCO For Women in Science Laureate 2002 Asia, on the successes and failures of implementing science-based policy in India. 


        Ghinwa Naja, UNESCO-L'OREAL For Women in Science International Fellow 2004, on the flaws in the system that prevent us from solving catastrophic environmental problems. 


        Rehana Jauhangeer, UNESCO-L'OREAL For Women in Science International Fellow 2004, on the need for today's young scientists to develop the political skills necessary for influencing public policy.
