*ICTP-SAIFR School on Biological Physics: from Molecular to Macroscopic
Scale*
Start time: March 9, 2020
Ends on: March 14, 2020
Location: São Paulo, Brazil
Venue: IFT-UNESP
*Description: *
Biological physics is a rapidly developing research area, attracting and
challenging researchers from physical, mathematical and biological
sciences. The primary purpose of this school is to provide the participants
(that normally come from different research fields) with a solid physical
background on fundamental theoretical, experimental and computational
concepts commonly used to study soft- and bio-matter systems from the
molecular to the cellular scale, and to cross-pollinate these different
disciplines.
Covering a broad spectrum of biophysical topics from highly charged,
molecular Coulomb systems to the collective behavior of active
particles and a broad spectrum of methodological approaches such as
advanced constant-pH simulation techniques or recent developments in the
foundations of non-equilibrium statistical physics, the school aims at
discussing basic concepts as well as state-of-the-art research, and at
fostering constructive interactions between theory, simulations and
experiments. To this end, a series of about 10 topical lectures will be
complemented by discussion and exercise sessions.
There is no registration fee and limited funds are available for travel and
local expenses.

ICTP-SAIFR School on Applications of Nonlinear Systems to Socio-Economic
Complexity
Start time: April 14, 2020
Ends on: April 18, 2020
Location: São Paulo, Brazil
Venue: IFT-UNESP
*Description: *
Complexity science is a new research field which focuses on complex systems
with numerous components interacting with each other and their environment
in many different ways. Intrinsically interdisciplinary, complex systems
occur in all of nature and complexity concepts are applied in various
scientific areas including the social and economic sciences.
Complex socio-economic phenomena, such as financial crises, epidemics,
crime propagation and opinion formation can be studied through complexity
concepts and appropriate mathematical and computational modelling.
Developing such formalisms and validation protocols are some of the new
challenges of this new research field.
The school aims to provide an interdisciplinary training to PhD students
interested in complex systems and its applications to social research.
Lectures will cover theoretical and computational aspects of complex
systems and present the current research trends in the field.
This activity will be followed by the Workshop on Sociophysics: Social
Phenomena from a Physics Perspective
<https://www.ictp-saifr.org/workshop-on-sociophysics-social-phenomena-from-a-physics-perspective/>.
Candidates may apply either for one or both activities. There is no
registration fee and limited funds are available for travel and local
expenses.
