"Interfacing Ion Channels to Microelectronics: 
Comparing Single Channel Activities from Four Systems"


Abstract:
As part of a project centered on functionally 
incorporating ion channels in non-native and 
polymer- stabilized lipid bilayers, we are 
interested in characterizing the ion 
translocation behavior of the resulting 
assemblies.  We have investigated several 
ion-channels with a view towards using them in 
tethered bilayers over microelectronic devices 
for eventual biosensor applications.  The ion 
channel characteristics and their functional 
incorporation in bilayers will be 
presented.  Single channel ion current 
fluctuations were measured by several methods and 
these data will be discussed.  Finally methods to 
tether the ion channel/lipid bilayer assembly to 
solid state devices and protein-based techniques 
for stabilization will be presented.
