2008 IRD/CLARIS Training program on the CHAC Statistical Downscaling Method
CHAC[1] : An Atmospheric Pattern Classification Method for Precipitation and Temperature Downscaling
Buenos Aires, (August 20-22, 2008)
Presented by Jean-Philippe Boulanger (IRD) and Ariel D'Onofrio (UBA)
Rationale
Climate statistical downscaling is an easy-to-use, computationally cheap and powerful method to compute daily variability of surface variables (e.g. precipitation, temperature) from large-scale atmospheric conditions. In the framework of the European CLARIS Project, we developed a statistical downscaling method based on weather pattern classification (D'Onofrio et al., 2008). The method has been calibrated for a large set of stations in Argentina and demonstrated to be skilful not only to reproduce the daily variability but also extreme event conditions (Menendez et al., 2008). The method has been formatted in a Matlab Toolbox thanks to the support of the 2008 IRD/Spirales Programme.
Program Goal and Objectives
The overall goal of this training program is to familiarize participants with a comprehensive method for climate statistical downscaling. At the end of the 3-day course, each participant will know how to calibrate the method for his/her own purpose, to make verification simulations and graphics and to realize new simulations using any kind of atmospheric circulation pattern inputs (e.g. Reanalysis, GCM outputs from Climate predictions or Climate Change simulations).
Specifically the program will focus on:
a.. Introduction to weather pattern classification
b.. Description of the CHAC method
c.. Preparation of input datasets (daily station data and atmospheric patterns)
d.. Calibration of the method
e.. Validation of the method
f.. Prediction simulations
About the training workshop
The program will start on August 20 and end August 22, 2008. It will be held in the Department of Computer Science situated at the UBA Faculty of Exact Sciences. Detailed information will be sent to the participants.
International participants should plan to arrive two days before the program begins to adjust to time zone differences and recover from travel fatigue.
