>
>Estimados todos,
>
>Este martes 10 de junio tendremos el agrado de recibir al Dr. Enrico
>Stefani y la Dra. Ligia Toro. El seminario se llevará acabo en el aula de
>seminarios del LFBM, 2do piso, Pabellon II de Ciudad Universitaria. Les
>vamos adelantando la información respectiva:
>
>Enrico Stefani MD, PhD
>Departments of Anesthesiology and Physiology, University of California ,
>Los Angeles
>Distinguished Professor
>Vice Chair of Research, Dept. Anesthesiology
>Director, Division of Molecular Medicine
>Associate Director, Cardiovascular Research Laboratories
>
>Titulo: "Heart Estrogen, Estrogen Receptors and Cardioprotection"
>
>Resumen: Females in the reproductive age are more susceptible to cardiac
>arrhythmias but they have a lower risk of cardiac disease. We are
>investigating the mechanism(s) underlying this paradoxical phenomenon. We
>discover that heart can locally synthesize estrogen via the conversion of
>testosterone by aromatase activity. Heart estrogen is higher in females
>than in males downregulating K repolarizing currents which explains the
>higher susceptibility of females to cardiac arrhythmia. At the same time,
>heart estrogen activates protective signaling cascades reducing the risk
>of heart failure under stress. Furthermore, estrogen treatment in heart
>failure by pressure overload rescues the failing heart by reversing the
>pathological gene expression profile. The role of the various molecules
>including ion channels and signaling cascades will be discussed in
>relation to the mechanisms of estrogen induced arrythmogenesis and
>cardio-protection.

>Division of Molecular Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology,
>and Department of Molecular & Medical Pharmacology
>Professor

>Título: "Physiological roles of MaxiK channels"
>
>Resúmen: MaxiK channels are key regulators of several body functions,
>including neuronal excitability, uresis, reproduction and blood pressure.
>Our laboratory has been interested in deciphering basic mechanisms of how
>MaxiK channels and associated proteins work in concert to regulate blood
>pressure in health and during aging. I will discuss evidence of new
>mechanisms by which these ion channels may regulate vasoconstriction
>including regulation and association with G-protein coupled receptors,
>long-term genomic regulation by estrogen, and mechanisms of protein
>targeting.
