An introduction to deformation quantization

Deformation quantization, intoduced by Flato et al in the 1970's,  
provides a mathematical formulation for the notion of quantization  
based on Gerstenhaber's theory of algebraic deformations. A  
fundamental question is whether any Poisson structure can be quantized  
in this sense. Although partial answers were obtained in the 80's and  
early 90's, the general question remained open for 25 years, until M.  
Kontsevich gave an affirmative answer to this problem in 1997.  
Remarkably, Kontsevich's work resorted to ideas from string theory. I  
will give an overview of the deformation quantization problem (though  
mostly from a mathematician's standpoint), including examples and  
recent developments.
