"PROGRESS IN LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHY OF SYNTHETIC POLYMERS"
High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is at present the most
important tool for molecular characterization of synthetic polymers.
Present state and recent developments of the polymer HPLC methods will
be elucidated.
Size exclusion chromatography. Molecular characteristics of man-made
polymers include their molar mass, chemical structure, and physical
architecture, all exhibiting certain distribution. Methods, which
provide information on distribution of polymer molar masses are
presently dominated by size exclusion chromatography (SEC). Critical
assessment of SEC will be presented.
Coupled methods of polymer HPLC. In order to characterize complex
polymers, which exhibit more than one single distribution in their
molecular characteristics, entropic (exclusion) retention mechanism of
SEC must be combined with one or several enthalpic (interaction)
retention mechanisms. These combinations result in coupled methods of
high performance liquid chromatography of polymers (polymer HPLC). The
aim of coupled methods of polymer HPLC is to suppress selectivity of
separation according to one molecular characteristic so that another
characteristic can be assessed independently and without
interferences. Alternatively, the separation selectivity according to
one characteristic is enhanced so that the second characteristic can
be neglected. The already established and also novel coupled methods
of polymer HPLC will be introduced. These are eluent and temperature
gradient polymer HPLC, liquid chromatography under critical conditions
of enthalpic interactions, liquid chromatography under limiting
conditions of enthalpic interactions, and enthalpy assisted SEC.
Full retention-elution procedures. A specific group of modern methods
for polymer separation represent the full retention ? elution
procedures (FRE). In FRE, a complete polymer retention followed by a
controlled, fast release and elution takes place within a HPLC-like
column.. Principles and selected applications of the adsorption based
FRE separations will be elucidated.
Two-dimensional polymer HPLC. Compresensive characterization of
complex polymers in terms of all their molecular characteristics is
hardly possible within one single separation column and applying just
one separation step. Macromolecules have to be successively separated
according to each characteristic applying optimized two? or multi-
dimensional approaches. The latter represent an important challenge
for research in macromolecular field. Strategies and achievements but
also a multitude of problems in the area of two- dimensional
separations of complex polymers utilizing tandem combinations of
coupled methods, FRE and SEC will be presented.
Los esperamos !!!
