Subject: PhD positions in experimental astrophysics - Leiden Observatory
Dear Colleagues,
from january 1st 2009 onwards, I have vacancies for
four-years junior-research (PhD student) positions.
I'm looking for enthusiastic and talented experimental
physicists or physical chemists with interest in astronomy
related research or astronomers with a good record in
instrumentation.
The positions involve NOVA (Netherlands Research School
for Astronomy) and SRON (Netherlands Institute of Space
Research) funded projects on solid state astrochemistry
and transient gas phase spectroscopy:
- inter/circumstellar ice processing using VUV irradiation
and/or atom bombardment applying spectroscopic and mass
spectrometric techniques.
- chemical complexity in inter/circumstellar ices, constructing
a new state-of-the-art experimental setup.
- submm spectroscopy of plasma generated molecular transients in
support of upcoming large scale observational facilities
(HIFI and ALMA).
Research projects typically comprise 80% laboratory based and
20% observational/modelling work.
The projects are situated in the Sackler Laboratory for Astrophysics
that is embedded in Leiden Observatory (www.strw.leidenuniv.nl) with
more than 100 PhD students and postdocs.
Applicants should apply - preferably by email - and arrange
for two letters of recommendation.
The positions are open from 01.01.2009 and applications are
accepted until the vacancies are filled. The positions are
at the Junior Research level with full social benefits and
a training programme is part of the agreement.
The successful candidate concludes the position with a thesis
in the field of astronomy (experimental laboratory astrophysics)
at the end of the four year term.
Kind regards,
Harold Linnartz
