 Dear Colleagues,

I will appreciate if you can distribute this add among your students and/or
other potential candidates.

*Postdoctoral Opportunity in Chemical Modeling of Nontraditional Energy
Sources*

The Institute for Clean and Safe Energy at the University of Utah (
http://www.ices.utah.edu/ ) anticipates the opening of a postdoctoral
position starting August 2010. The position is available to individuals with
a strong quantitative background in molecular sciences and an interest in
computational modeling of nontraditional energy sources. Specifically, the
selected individual will work with an interdisciplinary team of physicists,
chemists, chemical engineers and geologists to:

   - Establish a representative three-dimensional models of the oil shale
kerogen and sand tar asphaltenes by performing three-dimensional
optimizations of proposed two-dimensional structures, calculating electron
densities and frontier orbitals, swelling properties and organic/inorganic
   matrix interactions.
   - Use experimental data from Utah oil sands and Green River oil shale to
guide and validate the structure/dynamics of the proposed models.
   - Correlate computational results with experimental data including data
from solid and liquid state 13C NMR spectroscopy, CT imaging, TGA data on
pyrolysis kinetics, small angle x-ray scattering data, and ICR-mass
spectroscopy on both the mineral matter and kerogen samples.

Only candidates with a strong computational chemistry background will be
considered. Programming experience is desirable but not necessary. The
postdoctoral position is for one year with second and third year renewal
possible upon satisfactory performance and funding availability. Interested
candidates should send their applications, including a complete CV, a letter
of interest, and the names of three possible references, electronically to:
