Buenos Aires, June 4, 2010
Dear Madam / Dear Sir:
My alma mater is at the hands of a gang. It might be called a mafia, cabal
or clique, but no matter how you name it, what I mean is a secret group of
academics who hold the power of a higher education institution to use it
for their own benefit. Democracy is a parody in our school, when election
time comes they pretend a change with no change. As put it humorously in
Italian: "Si vogliamo che tutto rimanga com´è, bisogna che tutto cambi."
I reentered the School of Sciences of Buenos Aires university in 1995.
Having a practical background I found the academic policy not to my liking.
They have driven the "publish or perish" doctrine to mockery. The professor
performance is measured by the number of papers, the content having no
bearing. As a consequence, the hapless academic is forced to maximize the
number of published papers, and the school has become a
bullshit-producing-engine. Consider for instance Prof John Doe who wrote
154 papers in 14 years, that is, about one paper per month. I happen to
know this case because I contested with him and I was wiped out by his
landslide of papers. Professors are expected to ask for funds, for
instance, the chairwoman of the math department submitted a request for u$s
200.000 for lab equipment, what lab did she mean for Christ's sake? There
are people who boasts of scientific achievements by faking a project,
submitting a bogus grant proposal, publishing a bullshit paper, going on
vacation to attend foreign meetings, you name it. I know of all these cases
because I made a research on corruption inside the beast.
I reacted to this academic show by publishing satirical notes on the
academic policy, and it was then when I was manipulated by a mafioso task
force. They gave me a full mobbing treatment. Then they aborted my contract
to get rid of me. I appealed to the dean, but the honorable capomafia
dismissed the case by violating academic judgmental rules. It’s a long
story indeed, I have written plenty of accounts of the proceedings of the
academic sham.
My effort to find support from my colleagues was futile, they kept their
mouth shut - in fact they cannot care less as long as they get the
end-of-month salary. Mind you, this is the normal attitude of my fellow
countrymen, most of them are resigned to domestic political corruption.
Indeed, I have witnessed general Peron administration, and all the
intermediate hypocrites, up to current Mrs Kirchner.
Very truly
yours,
Fabio Vicentini,
PhD
