*Nota.

Buenos Aires, December 2, 2013

Dear colleagues:

Subject: The rules of the game

Excuse me if I am disturbing you again. This is one of a series of articles
which I intend to compile into a single booklet. Each article is called a
*canto* because in my first article the very first words are: *Lasciate
ogni speranza, voi* *ch'entrate*. The book will be entitled *The academic
inferno*. Canto XXXI follows.

After working 25 years as an Operations Research practitioner I entered the
University of Buenos Aires (UBA) as an assistant professor at the math
department.

UBA has 13 schools (facultades): Medicine, Engineering, Law, etc. One of
them, the School of Exact Sciences, contains 12 departments: Physics, Computer
Science, Mathematics, etc. The math dept has 60 full-time professors, all
of them pure mathematicians.

As soon as I landed in the academy, I was schooled in the rules of the
game. Firstly, and most important, you should write papers to peer-reviewed
journals. Secondly, you should submit requests for research grants to
ANPCYT the government agency for the promotion of science and technology.
Third, you should attend scientific meetings, etc

The number of papers should be as large as possible (the content is not
essential). The grant's amount should be as big as possible. Travelling to
academic meetings in the USA or Europe are preferred to those taking place
in the banana republic. These items will serve to inflate your CV.

Once in a while the math dept convokes a contest (concurso) on each
subject: Calculus, Algebra, Topology, etc. But, pure mathematicians do not
know what applied mathematics is, I mean, they have never applied
mathematics to solve problems in the real world, so they will call for the
catchall subject "Applied Mathematics"

At one time I entered the contest on applied mathematics. There were two
candidates, namely John Doe, a youthful fellow half my age, who had already
concocted 22 papers on differential equations, and myself, 60 years old
with no papers at all. Doe scored 22 goals to naught, and won the contest.

In spite of my defeat I was permitted for a while to lecture on OR-related
subjects in the math dept, mainly because I was the only applied
mathematician. Also I did some moonlighting as OR consultant for industrial
firms, and took my students to manufacturing plants as assistants.

But OR is also taught in the computer science dept where the students are
indoctrinated with the art of paper-making. Dr Hugo Scolnik was the
chairman of the computer dept, and he was displeased with my OR
practicality in his absolute domain where he had six professors (his wife
included) industriously writing papers. He deviously planned to terminate
my contract, and I was kicked out from the school while lecturing
combinatorial optimization (algo 3). Having nothing to do I am writing this
book on academic corruption which I will dedicate to the s.o.b. as a mark
of respect and affection.

Sincerely,

Fabio Vicentini

OR consultant
