We extend the ADM formulation of General Relativity to f(Riemann) theories
of gravity. We shall first consider the case f(R)and show explicitly that
the variables in the Jordan and Einstein frames are related by a canonical
transformation. We shall then tackle the more involved case of f(Riemann)
with a particular attention to the number of degrees of freedom of the
theory.
