Max Planck Doctoral Fellowship in “Spatial-temporal dynamics of
signaling networks in cancer cells” at the Max Planck Institute of
Molecular Physiology, Dortmund, Germany

A 2-year Max Planck Doctoral Fellowship with the option of extension
is available starting as soon as possible in the Department of
Systemic Cell Biology at the MPI Dortmund under the supervision of Dr.
Koseska and Prof. Bastiaens.

The area of research is the dynamical behavior of living cells, which
is determined by the molecular interactions that occur within the
cytoplasm, as well as the spatial-temporal patterns that are generated
on a higher scale as a consequence of these intera¬tions. In order to
understand and possibly regulate specific biological functions, it is
necessary to i) reconstruct the underlying networks and ii)
characterize their dynamics. A dynamical system‘s theory approach
defined in this manner is especially valuable to study the mechanisms
that lead to carcinogenic conditions in cells, as well as the
possibilities for their therapeutic targeting.

In this project, an interdisciplinary team of biologists and
physicists will develop a systems biology approach to study the
struc¬ture and dynamics of protein interaction networks. The focus is
on the comparison of post-translational signaling mechanisms in
healthy and cancer cells. We aim at developing novel methods for
network reconstruction from single cell measurements, as well as
developing continuous models (ODEs and PDEs) to understand how the
temporal and spatial protein distribution affects signaling processes
in healthy and diseased conditions.

The successful candidate should have a Master‘s degree (or equivalent)
in physics, mathematics, engineering or a related subject, demonstrate
willingness to work in an interdisciplinary research field / team and
a high language proficiency in written and spoken English. A
background in modeling dynamical systems would be of great advantage.

The Max-Planck-Society is committed to support more handicapped
individuals and especially encourages them to apply. The Max-
Planck-Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas
where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages
women to apply.

The fellowship will be granted the guidelines of the Max Planck
Society for doctoral studies.

The application deadline is August 11th, 2013. Please include a cover
letter, recent CV, copies of your certificates as well as two names of
reference with contact details in your applications and send them to
Aneta.Koseska en mpi-dortmund.mpg.de or by mail to:
