The extended radio continuum emission from regions of massive star
formation is usually dominated by free-free emission from the associated
HII region. However, when observed with a high angular resolution
interferometer, the extended emission can be filtered out and a variety of
compact objects can be detected and studied. These compact object include
hypercompact HII regions (free-free emission), low-mass young stars with
magnetospheric activity (gyrosynchrotron emission) and the wind-wind
collision interface of massive binary systems (synchrotron emission). We
will discuss how these regions can be studied and characterized and what
can be learned from them. In particular, there are two new types of
compact radio objects whose nature is not clear yet and may be revealing
new phenomena.
