              "Type Ia supernovae in isolated white dwarfs?"

New pycnocuclear reaction rates may inject a susbtantial amount of energy
in cooling white dwarf at a certain point in their evolution. Preliminary
results indicate that the result may be catastrophic, causing the 12C+12C
reaction that initiates a thermonuclear explosion at lower density, and
mass, that the mechanisms for supernovae Ia that have been proposed up to
now. The result may be the explosion in isolated white dwarfs of high
mass, or explosion in sub-Chandrasekhar binary white dwarfs. I will review
what we know so far, and explain why this new mechanism is worth a serious
exploration.
