*Cell motility and morphodynamics driven by actin polymerization*

Martin Falcke, Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine, Berlin

Cells move on 2dimensional substrates by advancing lamellipodia, which are
flat membrane protrusions. Polymerization at the leading edge assembles the
semiflexible actin filament network and generates protrusion force. How
this force is supported by the network and how the assembly rate is shared
between protrusion and network retrograde flow determines the protrusion
rate. The processes in lamellipodia can be reconstituted in vitro.
Lamellipodia and reconstituted systems exhibit a rich variety of dynamic
phenomena. We use mathematical models to determine the mechanisms
underlying the dynamics.
