"Origin and impacts of Antarctic aerosols"

Dra. Eija Asmi (Servicio Meteorológico Nacional/Instituto Meteorológico
de Finlandia)

Aerosol particles have dual impact in the atmosphere: in one side, they
are atmospheric pollutants affecting the health of populations, while in
the other side they induce a net positive effect on global climate. The
aerosol impacts on climate are various. They interact with radiation and
thus affect the surface and tropospheric temperatures. They are critical
initial embryos for new cloud droplets and affect cloud lifetimes and
precipitation. In Antarctica, we are measuring various properties of
these particles: chemical composition, size distribution, scattering and
absorbing characteristic and vertical profiles – continuously since year
2013. With these data, we are investigating the origin of these
particles: what fraction is due to human actions, and what fraction is
natural. These questions are critical for global climate modelling. Our
study also highlights the interactions with meteorological parameters
and aerosols. For example, high wind speeds are seen to lead to intense
production of marine sea salt particles and resuspension of soil dust.
The strong interannual variation of boundary layer height, connected
with radiation, affects the mixing depth of the particles and thus their
surface concentrations. Natural particles form the vast majority of all
aerosol but our results also suggest a minor human impact, extending all
the way to Antarctica.
