Dear colleagues,

we would greatly appreciate it if you circulate this call for PhD
applications within your networks, if you deem it as appropriate. Flyer
also attached. Thank you!

The Astrophysics group in the School of Science at *University of New South
Wales (UNSW) Canberra* is seeking applicants for the PhD program in areas
related to binary star evolution (theory), accreting white dwarfs
(theory), supernova remnants (observation), and thermonuclear supernovae
and related transients (observation and/or theory).

The UNSW Canberra campus is located on the grounds of the Australian
Defence Force Academy (ADFA) in Canberra, Australia’s national capital.
Prospective students with high academic standing and an interest in stellar
transients/supernovae are encouraged to apply for our program (program code
1892):
https://www.unsw.adfa.edu.au/degree/postgraduate-research/physics-phd-1892

To be admitted, a student needs to be successful at obtaining a UNSW
Canberra scholarship. The scholarship towards a Doctor of Philosophy
includes full tuition waiver plus a $35,000 AUD annual stipend for the full
duration of the degree (nominally 3.5 yrs), with no formal coursework
required. International candidates must meet the UNSW English Language
requirements:
https://www.international.unsw.edu.au/english-language-requirements?field_english_language_tid=4018

The next application deadline is *20 March, 2020*, with another one
following 6 months later (18 Sept. 2020).

Prior to submitting an application for scholarship, prospective candidates
should first contact either:

   - Dr Ashley Ruiter (ashley.ruiter at adfa.edu.au)
   https://ashleyruiterastro.wordpress.com/ or
   - Dr Ivo Seitenzahl (i.seitenzahl at adfa.edu.au)

 To discuss a thesis project.
After discussing a project, the application documents must be submitted
through the UNSW online portal:
https://research.unsw.edu.au/submit-application *Step 3*. All supporting
documentation (*including scholarship application materials*) must be
uploaded by the closing date. Visit the Key Dates page
https://research.unsw.edu.au/key-dates for up-to-date information.

Successful applicants will have access to Australia's high-performance
computational facility, the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI),
and will be able to apply for telescope time on world-class telescope
facilities in Australia and abroad, including state-of-the-art facilities
located at the European Southern Observatory in Chile.

I'm happy to answer any questions from interested people (and yes, you will
see kangaroos here)! 🙂

But seriously, the UNSW websites are being re-done and can be confusing to
navigate.

  Best wishes,

   Ashley
