"A quick look at reconstructions for the solar activity over the last 4
centuries"
Dr. Hisashi Hayakawa
Institute for Space-Earth Environmental Research, Nagoya University (Japan)
Martes 7 de febrero a las 14:00 hs
The solar magnetic activity forms a basis for understanding the activity
of sun-like stars, as the Sun is the closest star from our planet and
hence has been observed for ≈ 4 centuries. Historical solar observations
have formed a basis for quantitative analyses for the long-term solar
variability, based on sunspot records and eclipse records. However, it
has been challenging to reconstruct the solar activity especially before
1900,resulting in multiple conflicting reconstructions for the sunspot
group number and significant data gaps in the sunspot positions
(Muñoz-Jaramillo and Vaquero, 2019, Nature Astronomy, 3, 205-211 ).
Archival
investigations allow us to improve this difficulty. This presentation
shows the latest development for archival investigations for the
historical solar activity, putting emphasis on the Dalton Minimum and the
neighborhood of the Maunder Minimum. The latest results contrast the
Dalton Minimum with the Maunder Minimum and indicate their different
background mechanisms.
Hisashi Haykawa is currently working as a designated professor at Nagoya
University and a visiting researcher at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. He
has obtained PhD degrees both in space physics (Kyoto Univ.) and history
(Osaka Univ.). He is an expert on extreme solar storms and long-term solar
activity on the basis of historical archival records.
