Estimadas/os,
Les invitamos a un nuevo coloquio del DF a cargo de,
*Francisco Rocha* (IFADyFE, CNRS, UBA - CONICET)
*The Mechanics of Granular Avalanches*
How can we describe the collective motion of grains in a dense avalanche?
Although this question has been studied for centuries, there is still no
unified theory capable of describing dense granular flows across their
different flow regimes. Predicting the yielding threshold of a granular
material, as well as the constitutive laws governing its flow, has
important implications for society, science, and technology. From a
technological perspective, granular materials are the second-most used
materials in industry. Understanding how to store, transport, and process
them is therefore essential for optimising processes across a wide range of
industrial sectors. On the other hand, granular materials are at the heart
of catastrophic geophysical flows, such as landslides and debris flows,
whose risk is being altered and, in many regions, exacerbated by climate
change. Understanding the physics of granular avalanches is therefore
crucial for hazard mapping and for mitigating damage to people,
infrastructure, and the environment. Over the past two decades, a paradigm
shift towards describing granular avalanches as an effective fluid has led
to substantial advances in the physical understanding of these systems. In
this colloquium, we will discuss how to characterise the constitutive laws
of granular materials across different flow regimes and how to describe
granular avalanches within a continuum framework. Finally, we will discuss
how this continuum approach can be used to understand emergent collective
phenomena and flow instabilities observed in different large-scale
geophysical flows.
