Over the last years, the way neurons encode information has been the subject of various
studies and still attracts the interest of researchers owing to the potential bio-inspired
applications. Various fields are concerned such as perception of sensorial stimuli,
information processing, bio-inspired circuits and of course artificial intelligence.

This project falls within this interdisciplinary context since we propose to study how
deterministic or stochastic perturbations may interfere in the process of information
encoding, information detection and information perception through models of neurons
which would be acting on their own or as a network.

For instance, the case of one-dimensional stimuli will be considered in a parallel neural
network where we propose to analyze how noisy perturbations can enhance the
information encoding via the supra-stochastic resonance phenomenon. Depending on the
applicant’s skills, an experimental analysis will be also carried out by exciting an electrical
neurons circuit via various appropriate types of excitations in order to validate the
theoretical and numerical findings.

A complementary part of this project will consist in taking into account the two-dimensional
stimuli, that are images. The impact of specific perturbations on the perceived image quality
will be investigated by considering both ordered or random perturbations as they can take
place in the image dithering process.
