<div dir="ltr">Estimadas/os,<br><br>Les invitamos a un nuevo coloquio del DF a cargo de,<br><br><b>Francisco Rocha</b> (IFADyFE, CNRS, UBA - CONICET)<br><i>The Mechanics of Granular Avalanches<br></i><br>How can we describe the collective motion of grains in a dense avalanche? Although this question has been studied for centuries, there is still no unified theory capable of describing dense granular flows across their different flow regimes. Predicting the yielding threshold of a granular material, as well as the constitutive laws governing its flow, has important implications for society, science, and technology. From a technological perspective, granular materials are the second-most used materials in industry. Understanding how to store, transport, and process them is therefore essential for optimising processes across a wide range of industrial sectors. On the other hand, granular materials are at the heart of catastrophic geophysical flows, such as landslides and debris flows, whose risk is being altered and, in many regions, exacerbated by climate change. Understanding the physics of granular avalanches is therefore crucial for hazard mapping and for mitigating damage to people, infrastructure, and the environment. Over the past two decades, a paradigm shift towards describing granular avalanches as an effective fluid has led to substantial advances in the physical understanding of these systems. In this colloquium, we will discuss how to characterise the constitutive laws of granular materials across different flow regimes and how to describe granular avalanches within a continuum framework. Finally, we will discuss how this continuum approach can be used to understand emergent collective phenomena and flow instabilities observed in different large-scale geophysical flows.<br><br>Aula Federman - Pabellón 1 - Ciudad Universitaria - CABA<br>Cecilia y Nahuel - Comisión organizadora de los coloquios del DF 2026<br></div>
