"The crucial role of anthropogenic short
lived species in climate, climate change and air quality"

Abstract:
A group of US research laboratories are working
to assess the sign, magnitude and duration of
future climate change driven by methane and
short-lived anthropogenic radiative species
[tropospheric ozone and the short-lived
anthropogenic aerosols, black and organic carbon
and sulfate]. Methane and the short-lived
aerosols and gases listed above are largely of
anthropogenic origin, important contributors to
radiative forcing, and primarily controlled for
reasons of local and regional air quality. After
a brief introduction to atmospheric chemisttry, I
will present examples of win-win, win-break even and win-
lose air pollution control strategies, when the
climate impacts of future actions taken to reduce
local and regional air pollution are considered.
