Convergence of Fourier Series: Past, Present, Future

The celebrated theorem of Lennart Carleson on the pointwise
convergence of Fourier series was proved in 1965, providing a
definitive answer to a question which is so natural that it goes
back to the beginning of the subject.
We  begin recalling the precise statement of the Theorem, and explain
why the Theorem is worthy of an Abel Prize citation. The Theorem, or
its proof, are essential to other questions,
which are recalled, with an emphasis on some new, suggestive results.
