Call for postdoctoral positions for the project
Philosophy of Canonical Quantum Gravity
funded by an ERC Starting Grant
of the European Research Council

The project Philosophy of Canonical Quantum Gravity announces two one-year
post-doctoral positions with the possibility of an extension.

Project description. During the first two years of the project, we shall
address some philosophical problems concerning the foundations of quantum
mechanics and space-time theories that are relevant for contemporary
attempts to build a quantum theory of gravity. With respect to quantum
mechanics, we shall address the problem of constructing a consistent
interpretation of the quantum formalism in light of one of the most elegant
mathematical formalizations of canonical quantization, namely geometric
quantization. With respect to general relativity, we shall address some
philosophical problems concerning space-time theories and gauge theories in
light of both the so-called gauge theories of gravity and the generalized
theories of gravity with torsion and/or non-metricity. To do so, we shall
consider the Einstein-Cartan action and the theory of Cartan connections,
the MacDowell-Mansouri action, teleparallel gravity, the BF topological
field theory, and the formulation of general relativity in terms of Ashtekar
variables.

Starting Date: November 2011, with the possibility of negotiating a
modification of the starting date.

Eligibility Requirements: Eligible candidates must hold a PhD or equivalent
in philosophy, physics or mathematics by November 1st, 2011.

Le projet Philosophie de la Gravitation Quantique Canonique lance un appel à
candidature pour deux bourses post-doctorales d’une année renouvelable.

Description du projet. Pendant les deux premières années du projet, nous
aborderons certains problèmes philosophiques qui concernent les fondements
de la mécanique quantique et des théories de l’espace-temps, et qui
deviennent pertinents dans le cadre de tentatives actuelles de construire
une théorie quantique de la gravitation. En ce qui concerne la mécanique
quantique, nous adresserons le problème de construire une interprétation
consistante du formalisme quantique à la lumière d’une des formulations
mathématiques la plus élégante de la quantification canonique d’un système
classique, à savoir la quantification géométrique. En ce qui concerne la
relativité générale, nous adresserons certains problèmes philosophiques
classiques concernant les théories de l’espace-temps et les théories de
jauge à la lumière tant des formulations dites de jauge des théories de la
gravitation que des théories généralisées de la gravitation avec de la
torsion et/ou de la non-métricité. Pour cela, nous nous focaliserons sur l’
action d’Einstein-Cartan et la théorie des connexions de Cartan, l’action de
MacDowell-Mansouri, la théorie du télé-parallélisme, la théorie topologique
des champs BF et la formulation de la relativité générale en termes des
variables d’Ashtekar.

Début du séjour post-doctoral : Novembre 2011, avec possibilité de négocier
un report.

Conditions : Les candidats doivent être titulaires d’un doctorat en
philosophie, physique ou mathématiques au 1er novembre 2011 (ou détenir un
diplôme équivalent).
