Abstract: The field of high-energy astronomy has been revolutionized
during the last decade as a result of many discoveries made by both
ground-based and space-borne instruments. In particular, ground-based
telescopes using the atmospheric Cherenkov technique have discovered many
new high-energy sources, including active galaxies, supernova remnants,
pulsar nebulae, starburst galaxies and binary systems. VERITAS, an array
of four Cherenkov telescopes located in southern Arizona, USA, is one of
the premier observatories operating today. This talk will introduce
high-energy astronomy, describe the detection technique, and discuss some
of the latest results from the VERITAS array. The talk will also outline
the plans for the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), a future, much larger
array.
