Subject: Post-doctoral/Ph.D. positions in Molecular Quantum Computing, Alberta,
     Canada

Two post-doctoral positions in theoretical chemical physics are available in the group of Prof. Alex
Brown at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (www.chem.ualberta.ca/~abrown/).
Funding for the project "Molecular Quantum Computing" is made available through an Alberta
Ingenuity New Faculty Award. The objective of the research is to develop, test, and apply
theoretical methodology, and associated computational techniques, for performing quantum
computation using vibrational states of molecules as the quantum bits (qubits) and tailored laser
fields to apply the quantum logic gates – see our recent work in this area in J. Chem. Phys. 124,
034111 (2006) and J. Chem. Phys. 124, 144109 (2006).

Post-doctoral position 1: Implementation of optimal control theory algorithms within the multi-
configurational time-dependent Hartree (MCTDH) framework for treating the quantum dynamics.
Candidates should have knowledge of quantum dynamics, possibly including MCTDH, and/or
optimal control theory. Computer programming experience is essential.

Post-doctoral position 2: Electronic structure calculations to determine molecular potential energy
and dipole moment surfaces for candidate molecules for quantum computing. Candidates should
have knowledge of electronic structure techniques and software. Familiarity with potential energy
surface fitting and reaction surface Hamiltonians would be beneficial.

The initial appointments will be for one year, with possible renewal for up to two additional years
upon mutual agreement. The starting annual stipend is $30,000-$38,000 Cdn, plus a moderate
dental and supplemental health benefit program – starting salary dependent upon experience.
General information regarding post-doctoral positions at the University of Alberta, health care
insurance/benefits, professional development, the city of Edmonton, childcare, and housing, is
available from the Post-doctoral Fellows Office at the University of Alberta, see their website
gradfile.fgsro.ualberta.ca/postdoctoral/

Interested candidates should send a CV (by email) and the names and addresses
(including email) of three references to the address listed below. Please note in your application
the position you are applying for. Please send all correspondence to alex.brown en ualberta.ca,
Department of Chemistry, University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, T6G 2G2, Canada. Applications will
be considered as they are received and the start date can be as early as September 2006.

In addition to the postdoctoral positions, we also have openings in the above research areas for
graduate students who want to pursue a Ph.D. If you are interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in this
research area, please contact me at the email address above. However, in order to pursue
graduate studies in the department of chemistry at the University of Alberta, you have to apply
directly to our graduate program. The web site
                               http://www.chem.ualberta.ca/grad.html
provides all information regarding the graduate program including step-by-step
admission procedures.
